If you’re reading this review, chances are you’re keen to standout from the crowd and go a little left field. The city hatchback segment is getting a little too predictable these days. The main players are safe and easy options like the Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2 and Volkswagen Polo. The Citroen C3, however, is a much different proposition.

The current generation model has been around since 2017, but a mid-life refresh in 2021 gave the city runabout a new front fascia, a new set of running shoes and some rather eye-catching two-tone exterior colour themes. The interior has also been tweaked.

Along with the update, there’s been a $2,000 price hike, as well, bringing the single spec C3 Shine sticker to $28,990 before on-road costs. It’s dearer than equivalent Japanese competitors, but still undercutting its German rival.

No review of a French car is complete without some words about the styling. Like sister company Peugeot, quirkiness is the order of the day for any car that wears the Citroen badge. The C3’s design has evolved much – in the right direction – since the oddball early 20s models. It’s now much easier on the eyes and ‘odd’ has been replaced with ‘fun’.

The high-spec 2022 Citroen C3 Shine tested here sports a white/red two-tone exterior colour theme, with the white body paintwork contrasted nicely with red accents on the front foglight bezels, door mouldings (Airbumps in Citroen speak), side mirrors and roof. A range of other two-tone colour themes are available.

New style 16-inch alloy wheels are fitted, while LED headlights and LED daytime running lights are also employed.

The C3 looks quintessentially French, meaning despite its pint size it will not go unnoticed on the road – this time around in a good way.

The interior of the C3 shows how a small cabin can still be made to look interesting. Generic or derivative design isn’t what you see here, instead the C3 plays around with rounded rectangle shapes which have been applied to objects like the air-con vents, steering wheel columns, instrumentation binnacles and door grab handles. Speaking of door grab handles, they are stylish items inspired by designer luggage handle.

Like the exterior, a contrasting colour accent strikes through the dashboard and also on the seats, lifting cabin ambiance. However, the colour is fixed to bluish teal regardless of the exterior colour, which looks a bit mismatched. It’d be nice if it was the same colour as the exterior accent.

For a city car, cabin space isn’t as tight as we’d thought. The front row of seats have generous headroom and legroom, while the rear is spacious enough to comfortably accommodate two average-sized adults. All seats are flat and wide, with bolsters on the sides for support. They offer good comfort levels akin to those in bigger cars.

The lack of a lidded centre storage compartment aside, usable storage spaces are plenty around the cabin. The door pockets are thick, the glovebox is large and a total of four cup holders (two in front and two in the back) can be found, though the front ones are quite small.

The boot space measures 300 litres with the rear seats up, and with them folded the space expands to 922 litres. Both capacities are larger than those in the Toyota Yaris and Mazda2, dwarfed only by the Volkswagen Polo.

In terms of technology the C3 Shine features keyless entry and push button start, automatically activated lights and wipers, and auto-dimming electrochrome rear view mirror. There’re also built-in satellite navigation, FM/AM radio, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay / Android Auto smartphone mirroring. Voice command is available for radio, navigation and telephony functions but you wouldn’t be using it very often as it’s not that effective in recognising speech.

The 7-inch infotainment touchscreen dispenses high clarity graphics and the interface is intuitive and very responsive to the touch. The built-in satellite navigation also works well, so does Bluetooth pairing.

However, the climate control functions are embedded into the touchscreen. Though there’s a shortcut button next to the screen that navigates directly to the climate control page, you’ll still need to takes your eyes off the road to adjust the settings on the screen. The good old rotary knob is always preferred. Thankfully though, a knob is fitted below the touchscreen to operate the radio/volume.

The C3 comes with all essential safety features expected of a modern car. These include Automatic Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Recognition, Distance Alert System and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System.

Cruise control is also fitted, but the control stalk is located in the most impractical location you could find – behind the steering wheel and completely out of sight.

The C3 is exclusively powered by a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine developing 81kW @ 5500rpm and 205Nm @ 1500rpm. Three potters are never the most refined of engines and the trait is evident also in the C3. There’s that layer of gruffness that you’d need to be accustomed to. But once that’s behind you, the little 1.2L turbo will be appreciated for its responsiveness and poke.

Be it ploughing through the daily grind or blasting through some city back roads, the engine is always willing, thanks in most part to peak torque arriving low in the rev range. The 6-speed auto is also quick shifting, adding to drivetrain efficiency. As a daily city car, the C3 has more than enough punch to get around. The 0-100km/h sprint is rated at 10.9 seconds, while claimed top speed is 188km/h.

Usually, small cars don’t ride as smoothly as bigger cars. Not the case of the C3. The ride is easily the most compliant in the segment, thanks to a soft suspension set up that soaks up bumps and ruts with aplomb. This is the most comfortable city car we’ve rode in for quite a while. And if you’re not already aware, Citroen has long been known for their cushy ride.

The softer set up does mean that the C3 roll around corners a little more than sportier rivals, but nothing too unmanageable. The steering is light and easy, making the C3 quite a joy to chuck around town.

Small capacity turbo engines are incredibly fuel efficient, and the C3 is no exception. With mostly city driving and the occasional heavy footed spurt, the little hatchback averaged 7.7L/100km at the end of our week-long test. This is against the rated combined average of 5.2L/100km. It runs on the more expensive premium unleaded fuel though.

The C3 is covered by a 5-year factory warranty with no cap on kilometres. A 5-year complimentary roadside assist is included as well. It requires a service every 12 months or 15,000km, whichever comes first.

The Citroen C3’s unique character and chic design make it one of the more interesting city cars in the segment. Combined with good space, a solid powertrain and comfortable ride, there’s quite a lot to like. The only real sticking point is perhaps its high price.

Citröen’s premium arm has introduced its first vehicle, the DS 7 Crossback which the company says is aimed at customers who are in tune with the latest trends, appreciate the world of luxury and prefer to express their unique personality.

With its LED light signatures, diamond-effect grille, unique interior stitching techniques, and the motorised watch by B.R.M, as featured on the DS E-TENSE concept, the DS 7 Crossback is said to represent the DS’ vision for the future.

Inside, the cabin features two 12-inch screens positioned at the heart of the cabin. The first is an innovation in the world of SUVs: it works with the navigation system as well as managing the multimedia interface, MirrorScreen and DS CONNECT functions. The second is a personalisable screen dedicated to the digital instrument cluster.

The SUV will be available with two petrol and two diesel powertrains, along with a plug-in hybrid petrol drivetrain with a total output of 220kW consisting of a 147kW engine coupled with two electric motors and a new 8-speed automatic making it an all-wheel drive.

The hybrid stores its energy in a 13kW/h lithium-ion battery positioned under the second-row seat floor. In all-electric mode, the battery delivers a range of up to 60km and takes 4.5 hours to charge in standard mode. In fast mode with a 6.6kW charger that plugs into a 32A socket, it can take less than 2.5 hours.

The DS 7 Crossback is also billed as the first step towards autonomous driving, with innovative technologies such as DS NIGHT VISION that uses an infrared camera to improve night vision, DS CONNECTED PILOT semi-autonomous driving and DS DRIVER ATTENTION ASSIST that uses an infrared camera above the steering wheel to prevent inattention.

Like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and Audi A8, the DS 7 features what is called the DS ACTIVE SCAN SUSPENSION that uses a camera to scan the road ahead and continuously adjusts the suspension damping.

Citroën is stepping up their SUV offensive with the new C3 Aircross, hot on the heels of the new C5 Aircross which made its debut in April. The new model will replace the C3 Picasso and, as the name suggests, is based on the latest C3.

Inspired by the C-Aircross Concept at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the new C3 Aircross stands out from the crowd with its two-tier lighting setup with LED DRLs in the upper section, 3D-effect rear taillights, skid plates, roof rails and C-pillar graphics. It’s also 20mm higher than the regular C3.

Inside, the cabin is home to broad and comfortable seats, first seen on the C4 Cactus. There’s also plenty of storage, including a wireless smartphone charging area in the centre console. Other highlights include colour head-up display, Active Safety Brake, Intelligent Beam Headlights and Speed Sign Recognition and Recommendation, as well as Park Assist and Citroën Connect Nav.

There are plenty of customisation options, too, with up to eight body colours, four roof colours and four colour packs, five interior design schemes and 16- and 17-inch wheel designs to choose from.

The C3 Aircross measures 4.15m long, 1.76m wide and 1.64m tall, with a wheelbase spanning 2,600mm. It comes with 410 litres of boot space, which can be expanded to 520 litres with the rear bench slide forwards. Should more space is required, the rear bench can be folded down to liberate 1,289 litres. Additionally, the dual-height mobile boot floor provides a flat floor with the rear seatbacks folded down.

The French SUV is available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, including three PureTech petrol engines developing between 80kW to 94kW, and three BlueHDi diesels generating between 65kW to 87kW. A six-speed manual or EAT6 automatic are offered and connects the engines to the front wheels.

Citroën says the new C3 Aircross is at ease on most surfaces thanks to the Grip Control which comes with Standard, Sand, All-Road, Snow or ESP OFF modes. A Hill Descent Assist System also helps on inclines by limiting slippage as the car descends slopes.

The car is offered with various driver assist technology, including lane departure warning system, blind spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, driver fatigue sensing system and active parking assistance.

Citroën has taken the wraps off its new C5 Aircross SUV which will make its debut at the 2017 Auto Shanghai Show tomorrow.

As a sign of the increasingly important Chinese market, sales of the C5 Aircross will kick off in China in the second half of 2017, before going on sales in its European home market at the end of 2018.

Inspired by the Aircross concept, the production model sports a two-tier headlight and grille front-end design, with distinctive triple air intakes below it.

Along the sides, the blacked out A- and D-pillars give the car a floating roof look, while the C-shaped chrome trim framing the side windows are almost a direct lift from the concept.

Like the C4 Cactus, the Aircross is equipped with Airbumps to protect the lower reaches of the car.

At the back, the LED taillights feature a four-pot light signature, while a pair of tailpipes sprouts from the rear valence. The Aircross rolls on 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels.

Inside, the horizontal dashboard emphasises the width of the SUV, while a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and an 8-inch central touchscreen gives the car a high-tech look. Citroën says the “soft and warm materials” enhance the sense of protection and comfort.

The C5 Aircross is based on the EMP2 platform, which also underpins the Peugeot 308, and has a wheelbase of 2.73 metres making it bigger than the Peugeot 3008, but smaller than the seven-seater 5008.

No details of the SUV’s powerplant has been released as yet, but expect it to be powered by PSA Group’s latest engines, including the Prince 1.6-litre THP turbocharged four-cylinder petrol, a 1.2-litre PureTech three-cylinder turbo petrol and a 1.6-litre BlueHDi turbodiesel. A plug-in hybrid is also expected. They will be mated to either a six-speed manual or a new eight-speed automatic.

The PSA Group – manufacturer of Peugeot and Citroen cars, Transport & Environment (T&E), France Nature Environnement (FNE) and Bureau Veritas have published the test protocol for measuring real-world fuel consumption, a reliable framework based on a robust scientific approach.

The protocol defines the means (necessary equipment) and methods (measurement and processing) that should be systematically applied to calculate the average real-life fuel consumption of the average customer. The protocol breaks down into the following three steps:

  • selecting and checking the vehicle
  • driving the vehicle and performing the measurement
  • processing the measurement results

According to the release, the measurements should be taken when the car is being driven by a non-professional driver on public roads open to traffic and under real-life driving conditions, with normal use of air-conditioning systems, passenger and luggage loads and road gradients.

In addition to the original results already published in July 2016, Peugeot and Citroën will release the real-world fuel consumption figures of another 10 models (including the new Peugeot 3008 and Citroën C3) on their website in time for the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

By the end of 2016, real-world fuel consumption figures for 50 models tested during the year will be published on the Peugeot, Citroën and DS website. At the same time, a simulator to enable customers to predict their vehicles’ fuel consumption based on driving style and conditions will also be released online.

In 2017, the PSA Group, Transport & Environment, France Nature Environnement and Bureau Veritas will extend the same procedure to the measurement of real-world nitrous oxide emissions.

Gilles Le Borgne, Executive Vice President, Quality and Engineering, for the PSA Group, said:

This robust protocol is the result of unprecedented and successful cooperation between a manufacturer, NGOs and a certification organisation. It is now available for all to see and to use as inspiration to encourage greater customer transparency.”

Citroen’s DS Virgin Racing has released a video unveiling its new Formula E livery, ahead of the third seaon’s start on 9 October in Hong Kong.

Shot over 10 hours in thunderstorm conditions in the abandoned streets and walkways of Manchester’s Media City, the video opens with a panning shot through a lightning storm and across a pitch dark harbour. Out of the darkness emerges a hint of the DS Virgin Racing car, complete with new Season 3 livery.

DS Virgin Racing driver Sam Bird – winner of three pole positions in the 2015-16 season and fourth ranked driver globally for Formula E appears alongside DS Virgin Racing’s new driver José María López.

López is a nine-time world champion across seven different racing categories, known in the racing community and his Argentinian homeland as “Pechito”, or ‘The Cold One’ for his aggressive driving style. The pair walk through the darkened streets before the footage cuts to the cars, alternately screaming through abandoned streets in the rain and speeding around corners, reflections of the updated livery sliding off glass buildings and wet roads.

The big reveal comes after 60 seconds, where a driver performing 360 degree water-spraying doughnuts dramatically unveils the DS Virgin Racing season 3 livery, complete with a unique new pattern effect stretching across the chrome and a brighter, more vibrant version of purple, which has become the signature colour of the team in Formula E.  The new front wing, in a stacked double decker design is also a stunning addition to the racing car and looks amazing in the colours of the DS Virgin Racing team.

Throughout the video, shiftingslow and rapidmotion cuts between stuttered audio and bassy electronica. Weaved between all of this is the unmistakable, turbine-like whineof the Formula E enginesas the cars tear throughthe silent streets: hinting at the pop-up, street takeover nature of Formula E race tracks.

The anticipation is now building with less than three weeks to go until the beginning of season three of motorsport’s newest creation: Formula E in Hong Kong.
