Spied: Porsche Boxster Spyder to get 4.0 flat-four from 911 GT3

This is the upcoming Porsche Boxster Spyder, spotted in the wild virtually undisguised ahead of its 2019 debut. The highly anticipated convertible is said to be the new flagship model of the Boxster line-up, as it’s speculated to be powered by a detuned version the 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six engine from the 911 GT3 that will reportedly make 320kW (down from 373kW in the GT3).

And these spy photos further strengthen the rumours. We can see the prototype comes complete with a more aggressive body kit, complimented by larger and wider wheel and tyres, along with massive brake rotors clamped by large yellow calipers.

Further distinguishing the Boxster Spyder from lesser models is its ‘flying’ buttress-style rear deck, and the more aerodynamic design of the fabric roof. The rear diffuser also appears to be beefier.

With the regular Boxster models already switched to turbocharged four-cylinder engines, the Spyder will be the only variant in the range to employ an atmospheric engine. And reports suggest that it will be paired with either a six-speed manual or PDK dual clutch transmission.

The prototype appears to be very close to production, so we can expect more details to surface in the not too distant future.
