Please read this before installing Beta 2

Here’s a list of important documentation that you should read first before embarking on your installation of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Beta 2 or Windows SharePoint Services V3 Beta 2. Note that the links go to an OfficeOnline pre-release site and may change without prior notice, but since many of you are so anxious to install and evaluate Beta 2, I thought that it would still be very worthwhile to provide this information to you now. As for support, please do not use this blog for Q&A! :-) Your best option is to leverage the resources listed on the SharePoint Community Home Page. Have fun dogfooding!

IMPORTANT: The links listed below will open correctly in IE (6 or above) only if either the 2007 Office client applications (download here) or the OfficeOnlineBetaControl (download here) is installed on your computer.

Update: One other extremely useful information resource -- Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Migration Center.

Update #2: A couple of additional resources with essential information for Administators:

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

Please help me
I've installed SharePoint Server 2007 on a domain controller and I receive "The trial period for this product has expired".
I found this problem on http://officebeta.iponet.net/en-us/products/FX101517541033.aspx and it says "Run the workaround on the server that you have installed Office Server."
But where is the workaround ?

Some documentation says "Coming Soon".  Is there a way to tell when the documentation is updated?  I don't see a last updated date on the page.

quick question will data put into the beta2 be able to be migrated somehow into the final v3? Like through an export of the data and import onto the final server? Thanks

Our current plan of record is to support upgrading from Beta 2 to RTM.

Sandu, the workaround for installing MOSS in "standalone" mode on a DC has finally been posted at http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/1/a/b1a6dceb-92a3-4808-8dac-b4e40c90ce00/StandaloneDCWorkaround.msi.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

Okay, we spent the last few days trying different things to get Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2007 installed on the server – no matter what, we still keep coming back to the same issue. I have posted this issue over at Microsoft Office Discussion Groups under “Configuration Failed Windows SharePoint Services 3 Beta”; there are 3 others on that forum that have also had this issue.

Kevin, what exactly do you mean by "Microsoft Office Discussion Groups"? Please provide a URL to it.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

I can find no uninstall instructions.

For some reason the installation - tried to install on windows server 2003 SP1 - on a single server failed, with the error that the installer could not change the permissions on the Frontpage folder. The installation did not rolled back, with the prompt that this problem could be fixed.

I uninstall WSS from add/remove programs, but SQL Server 2005 Embedded Edition (SSEE) did not uninstall.

How can I unistall SSEE in order to re-install?

Luke, the OfficeOnline preview site is down at the moment due to some networking issues. Alas, I don't have an ETA yet on when it will be back online.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

I want to read everything I need to read about the complete suite before I install the beta.

I can read billions of documents on the web.  But I can't read the readme's that you suggest we read before installing sharepoint because I don't have Office 2007 beta on my machine.  I should not have to install one beta to read the readme for another beta.

Office 2007 has a "Save As HTML" option.  Please use it.

If for some reason you are not allowed to post HTML to the office 2007 site then please (a) post HTML copies of the readme's here on this blog and then (b) after posting HTML here please escalate the issue and get the policy changed for the office 2007 site.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

Since there is no way of knowing if you will ever post HTML versions of the readmes, I have created a login account into the office beta site and logged into the office beta site.  I have also downloaded and installed the office online beta control.  I still get authorization errors on the office site.  I can not access any of the readmes that you list as being important to read before installing sharepoint.

Why do I need to install applications just to read the readme for a product?  This is a VERY bad call on someone's part.  Let alone that installing the application doesn't even allow me to access the readme.

I am and MSDN subscriber and have used CTPs in the past.  On two occasions I have had to do complete OS reinstalls as a result of problems with the CTPs so when someone says "you need to read this before installing the Beta" I take that advice seriously.  Evaluating a new technology is a big enough effort when everything goes well.

We are considering basing the IT architecture for our startup on sharepoint 2007.  Please give us a way to access the readmes for the product.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

Don, the readme's for all 2007 Office system products are available at http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/beta/deploy.mspx and do not require the Office Online Beta (ActiveX) Control.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

To uninstall SSEE:

Start Registry Editor, and then locate the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall   In the left pane, click each GUID. For each GUID that you click, look for a display name in the right pane that matches “Microsoft SQL 2005 embedded Edition…”. When you see a display name that matches the name, copy the value of the Key named “UninstallString”

Open a Command-Window (Start->run->cmd)

Paste the Copied string.

Append “ CALLERID=OCSETUP.EXE” eg “MsiExec.exe /X{BDD79957-5801-4A2D-B09E-852E7FA64D01} CALLERID=OCSETUP.EXE”

There you go Don’t forget to reboot.

# re: Please read this before installing Beta 2

unistall WSS 3.00

on 32 bit platforms uninstall from prompt:

msiexec /x {CEB5780F-1A70-44A9-850F-DE6C4F6AA8FB} callerid=ocsetup.exe

then delete all from the %windir%\SYSMSI\SSEE directory (files will cause a subsequent installation to fail)

reboot and reinstall WSS 3.0

I've reinstalled succesfully

It worked for me, following the regedit proceedure was a treat, also managed to uninstall and few other programs that I had trouble with at the same time!

Cheers,
