Slidedecks from the SharePoint Conference 2006 and other very useful information

Many people during and after the SharePoint Conference have asked, “When will the slides be available?” The standard answer that we gave was, “In about 4-6 weeks, you’ll get a DVD with both the slidedecks and the video recordings of the sessions.” I know for many of you, that’s just way too long to wait. J

So, for the benefit of the readers of this blog, I’ve posted all of the conference slidedecks (3 from the General Sessions, 60 from the Breakouts) at a subsite of the team site that I use to collaborate with the SharePoint MVPs. The URL of the subsite is http://sharepointmvps.officeisp.net/spc2006, but please don’t all go there and start downloading everything at once because the servers won’t be able to handle the load. This is just a stop gap solution until we find a permanent place to share the slidedecks or when the conference DVDs become available. To optimize your download experience, you should first take a look at the SharePoint Conference breakout tracks and then download the slidedecks from only the track(s) that you’re most interested in.

And for some really excellent technical information on SharePoint Products and Technologies, take a look at the following resources that our UA team released just yesterday:

Update: The Channel 9 guys just posted the video that I had done with the SharePoint Group Program Managers a couple of weeks ago, so take a look at that as well!

# re: Slidedecks from the SharePoint Conference 2006 and other very useful information

Hi Lawrence:

I really appreciate your posting these slide decks so quickly. I think it keeps the excitement surrounding SharePoint going and that strongly contributes to the virtuous cycle.

I had followed the link from the Microsoft Records Management Team Blog and downloaded the decks before I read your post about not hitting the server (sorry). I left a comment over there (http://blogs.msdn.com/recman/archive/2006/05/24/606331.aspx)about how I think the impact of the decks could be dramatically improved.

I would like to point out that it is very close to impossible for one to read the breakout track descriptions at https://www.bluereg.com/event/sharepointconference/Link.aspx?url=tracks.htm&Title=Track%20Descriptions and then try to figure out which of those descriptions goes with which of the sixty decks posted at http://sharepointmvps.officeisp.net/spc2006/Shared%20Documents/Forms/AllItems.aspx?RootFolder=http%3a%2f%2fsharepointmvps%2eofficeisp%2enet%2fspc2006%2fShared%20Documents%2fBreakouts. Given the naming convention you (and usually the rest of Microsoft) choose in naming slide decks, it seems to me that the only prudent thing for us SharePoint fanatics is to download all the decks, open everyone of them, navigate to slide one, copy the "meaningful" name, choose File, Save As, paste in the "meaningful" name, click Save and then delete the file with the Microsoft naming convention. Otherwise, we've have to go through the "I wonder what's in this slide deck" game every time we wanted to review something.

If you know of an alternative to this process, please let us know.

Thanks again for all the hard work and the great information.

Thanks for the feedback, Robert. The good news is that through the magic of SharePoint (at just WSS V2 at that), with just a few mouse clicks, I was able to add the "Title" column to the file list views on that team site's Document Library. You see, SharePoint had recognized the PowerPoint file format during upload and "extracted" the Title property value out of each file. Now you can see the full title next to the filename of each slidedeck. Try accomplishing that on an FTP site or a regular Web page in less than a few minutes and with essentially no effort! :-)

Lawrence:

That is a very impressive feature of SharePoint! In effect, you just demo'd that with a few mouse clicks you increased the value of the posted information by an order of magnitude for both the poster and the end user. By exposing the actual titles, the end user can now more easily choose which decks to download thereby saving him/her the time and disk space lost due to downloading less valuable information. On the other side of the equation, your few mouse clicks have hopefully dramatically decreased the hit on the server from those unnecessary downloads.

I copied the new list so I can now use it to rename the downloaded decks without the need of opening each one simply for name-changing purposes. Once again, your few mouse clicks are going to pay off big time.

Now, is there a way for me to use a few mouse clicks on my end to automagically rename the files without having to go through them one at a time? If so, that would be awesome.

In any event, thanks again for the value-add.

Robert - once you have downloaded the files you can use essentially the same trick again in Windows Exporer to display the title property for each slide deck. Just right-click on the column headings at the top of your Windows Explorer window, and select the Title property. Hopefully this will solve the problem without needing to rename the files!

Graham:

Thanks for reminding me of that Title Property trick. It had been completely erased from my mental hard drive and I wasting a ton of time.

I followed your name link and have now subscribed to "The Fish Bowl". I look forward to reading some great things over there.

Over the weekend, I watched "SharePoint Products and Technologies 2007 -- the server side of Office" over at Channel 9. That is also a great video.

Now what I would like Lawrence, you, or some else to do is to post some of the videos from the conference in the same way we got to see the PDC videos, the Small Business Summit videos (but make the SharePoint videos downloadable) and the Mix videos.

My thinking is that SharePoint is the way forward and the sooner you get the info widely distributed, the sooner we put it to better use and the sooner the rest of the world catches on to its utility.

Just putting the videos on DVD's for conference attendees and the masters in some archive is so Howard Hughes and RKO - dead.

Thanks again for the great tip. I've already implemented it and also preserved it in OneNote so if my wetware goes down again I can retrieve.

Hi Lawrence,

Is this site http://sharepointmvps.officeisp.net/spc2006 still up?  I downloaded a few slide sets before.  It seems that it is not available any more.

Thanks!

Mimi, the SharePointMVPs team site is down at the moment due to some networking issues. Alas, I don't have an ETA yet on when it will be back online.

Hello folks,

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this conference (new budget year only started in June).  Does anyone know if this is a recurring conference?  If not, do you know of another SharePoint conference that is of the same quality as this one?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Joel.

How do I access the slides hosted here?  I went to the conference and my password/username does not seem to work at the SharePoint site.  What am I doing wrong or this something that only works in you are MS employee?

The http://sharepointmvps.officeisp.net/spc2006 site intermittently prompts for credentials (we're still debugging it), but you can just click [Cancel] until you see the site.
