Quote

This process of digging up the details and learning how things work leads down many side streets and to many dead ends, but is fundamental (I think) to understanding something new. Many times in my books I have set out to write how something works, thinking I know how it works, only to write some test programs that lead me to things that I never knew. I try to convey some of these missteps in my books, as I think seeing the wrong solution to a problem (and understanding why it is wrong) is often as informative as seeing the correct solution.

   |  Smartcard error

posted at 11:28 AM | | [5] |

I'm just recording this for future reference. If you are using a smartcard reader and Connection Manager reports the extremely helpful error "0x80090022: Provider could not perform the action since the context was acquired as silent," try these easy fixes first:
  • Unplug the card reader and plug it back in. (Normally the error here is "Can't find reader", which in my experience is almost always that a reboot confused the USB ports, but it's worth a try.)
  • Take the card out and slide it back in. (Save yourself the embarrassment I had of calling tech support only to learn this.)
That didn't fix it? Proceed ... Check Device Manager to be sure that the device is working:
  1. Right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the Hardware tab.
  4. Click Device Manager.

    • If there's no entry for Smart card readers, there's your problem. As they say, contact your administrator.
    • If there is an entry, open the node, right-click the device, click Properties, and make sure that it says "This device is working properly."
If all appears to be well, it can be something as simple as that the reader can't read your card. Gently clean the contacts on the smartcard using a pencil eraser and try again. This worked for me; I guess you only get so many years of carrying your smartcard around before it gets junked up enough to affect the contacts.

Still not fixed? More info here (although not this tip):

Troubleshooting network and dial-up connections

Good luck ... nothing like trying to log in to do something only to have to screw around with the connection for way too long.
