Teamed up with CodePlex and Visual Studio Team System

Microsoft is developing the next version of GotDotNet Workspaces, called CodePlex at http://www.codeplex.com. The main difference with Workspaces is that it has been written from the ground up in C# using .NET 2.0 technology with Team Foundation Server as application server and of course SQL Server 2005 on the back end. Although you can manage your projects via the web interface that CodePlex offers I was interested in testing it with a smart client interface. Yes, there is a desktop GUI application that connects to the CodePlex Team Foundation Server its name is Visual Studio Team Explorer client. This product comes with Visual Studio Team Foundation Server and is also available for download from the Microsoft Download Center at http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/a/d/2ad44873-8ccb-4a1b-9c0d-23224b3ba34c/VSTFClient.img. The image size is of 246 MB so in you can mount it with the Microsoft VirtualCD application that mounts standard (.ISO images) and non-standard (.IMG images) of CDs and DVDs, you can get it at http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe. Even both programs need Windows XP, I have installed successfully at work in my development workstation with Windows 2000 SP4, so do not let that the minimum system requirements scare you.
Team Explorer is a version of Visual Studio 2005 with all the development features removed, providing only the connectivity functionality for working with the Visual Studio Team System. The application integrates directly into the Visual Studio 2005 IDE if you previously have Visual Studio 2005 installed. But the main idea is that Team Explorer works as a stand-alone client for CodePlex project contributors that don’t have Visual Studio 2005. Here are some screenshots of the whole process.
