Mazda has been without a performance halo since the RX-8 ended production in 2012. After more than a decade of hiatus, it seems the Japanese manufacturer is toying with the idea of a new RX-badged sports car.

Now, of course the automative landscape has changed dramatically since the last RX-8 rolled off the production line. The push for electrified and low emission vehicles means if Mazda was to bring out a new halo sports car today, it would have to have some sort of electrification, if not full electrification, to keep emissions in check.

We all know what the RX stands for and if the new model does not have a rotary Wankel engine then it can’t be considered an RX sports car. Well, according to sources the next generation RX-9 will still feature a dual-rotor Wankel engine, but unlike its predecessors the rotary engine will not drive the wheels directly. Instead it will be used as a range extender in a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) setup.

The details are scarce but Mazda claims the RX-9 is targeting a 370hp (275kW) power figure with double the torque output at 550Nm. This may not seem like a lot for a sports car in today’s standard, however the company is set to keep the weight down. If the earlier RX-7 model is of any indication, we can expect the RX-9 to tip the scape at around 1.4 tonne. With such light weight to pull that power output should be enough to bring sizzling performance.

To proof how serious it is about the new RX-9, Mazda has even dropped some fancy renderings of the concept which will morph into the RX-9. It’s called the Iconic SP concept and it comes with all the hallmarks of an RX sports car – sculpted panels, long bonnet, pop-up headlights (that will be a challenge passing pedestrian safety regulations), wide haunches and curved rear windscreen.

But we’re more interested in the yellow RX-9 rendering by Rotor & Shaft, as the design has a better proportion and is more likely to make it to production.

Toyota’s first fully electric SUV, the all-new bZ4X has arrived in Australian showrooms, bringing with it a new BEV (battery electric vehicle)-specific platform utilising the latest motor generator and battery technology.

Jointly developed with Subaru, the bZ4X is based on a new platform that integrates the battery and motor generator into the vehicle’s structure, providing extra rigidity and a low centre of gravity. This approach allows the wheels to be pushed further outward to the front and rear, leaving more room for passengers within the vehicle’s footprint.

The bZ4X is offered in front or all-wheel-drive format. The front-wheel-drive version is equipped with LED headlights, 20-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors with auto power folding, power tailgate and privacy glass for rear side, quarter and back windows.

The interior features fabric and synthetic leather trim, eight-way power adjustable driver seat, heated front seats, leather-accented steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, smart entry and start, four cupholders and eight bottle holders.

The latest Toyota multimedia technology is housed within a 12.3-inch touchscreen and is compatible with wireless Apple CarPlay  and wireless Android Auto. Enhanced voice recognition using the “Hey, Toyota” command can control several functions such as “Open all windows”.

The SUV comes with BEV specific connected features such as charge station locators and charge management functionality within the myToyota Connect smartphone app. Over-the-air updates, cloud navigation and live traffic information are included.

The latest Toyota Safety Sense suite integrates a pre-collision safety system that can detect vehicles, motorcycles, cyclists (in daylight only) and pedestrians, including at intersections. Other features include emergency steering assist, lane trace assist, emergency driving stop system, road-sign assist (speed signs only) and parking support brake. The bZ4X is also equipped with active cruise control and seven airbags.

The AWD bZ4X brings a higher level of standard features, including a roof spoiler, fixed panoramic roof, roof rails and a gloss black bonnet accent.

AWD interiors gain a JBL premium sound system, premium synthetic leather seat trim, Qi-compatible 10W wireless charger8, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, driver’s seat memory function and a kick sensor for the power tailgate.

Safety enhancements for the AWD include driver monitor, blind-spot monitor, safe exit assist, intelligent parking assist and panoramic view monitor.

The AWD’s 212mm ground clearance and all-wheel drivetrain are leveraged by X-Mode off-road drive modes to enable off-road ability. X-Mode optimises traction for “Snow/Dirt” or “Deep Snow/Mud” conditions and incorporates Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control.

The FWD model features a front-mounted e-Axle that combines the transaxle, motor, and inverter into an integrated, compact unit that produces outputs of up to 150kW and 266Nm. The AWD model uses front and rear 80kW e-Axles with maximum combined outputs of 160kW and 337Nm.
Providing the electrical energy is a 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery that is rigorously tested for 20 days before being fitted to a car.

FWD driving range is 535km at 128Wh/km, while the more powerful AWD’s drive range is 485km at 141Wh/km.

European versions of the bZ4X which are tested on the WLTP cycle return a range of 436km at 168.9Wh/km for the FWD and 411km at 181.1Wh/km for the AWD.

Six exterior colours are available: Ebony Black, Frosted White, Liquid Metal, Silver Rush, Feverish Red and Dynamic Blue. A two-tone treatment is available for the AWD with gloss black for the roof and A-pillars complementing the body colour.

The FWD bZ4X is priced from $66,000 with the AWD bZ4X available from $74,900.

The bZ4X is covered by Toyota Warranty Advantage, which offers up to five-year unlimited kilometre coverage extending to seven-years on motor and driveline with log-book services.

Toyota also offers capped-price servicing for the first five years/75,000km with each 12-month/15,000km service costing $180.

Toyota bZ4X pricing (excluding on-road costs)

FWD: $66,000

AWD: $74,900

Options:

Premium paint: $575

Two-tone roof (AWD): $1,350

Polestar 4, the SUV coupe by the Scandinavian EV marque, is now officially on sale in Australia with a starting price of $81,500 plus on-road costs.

With first deliveries slated for August, the Polestar 4 is the fastest Polestar production car to date, with it slotted between the Polestar 2 sedan and Polestar 3 medium SUV in terms of size and price.

In its most potent form, the Polestar 4 Long Range Dual Motor can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 3.8 seconds thanks to 400kW of power and 686Nm of torque afforded by the dual electric motors – one at each axle. This model has a driving range of 580Nm (WLTP). A disconnect clutch allows the car to disengage the front electric motor when not needed, to maximise range and efficiency.

The Long Range Single Motor variant features a 200kW / 343Nm electric motor at the rear and a driving range of 610km (WLTP).

Both versions are capable of fast charging up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC. Bi-directional charging hardware is included, with vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality planned to be made available at a later date, providing for external devices to draw power from Polestar 4.

Like the other Polestar models, the Polestar 4 features an Android Auto powered infotainment system that utilises a 15.4-inch landscape-oriented screen. With Google built-in, including Google Assistant, Google Maps and Google Play, Polestar continues to offer a connected experience. Wireless Apple CarPlay is also included.

The instrumentation panel is a 10.2-inch display and includes speed, battery and range information. Also fitted is a head-up display (HUD) with a massive 14.7-inch projection area in front of the driver that relays key vehicle, telephony and navigation information to the windscreen.
A clever ‘snow mode’ function for the HUD switches the text colour from white to yellow, improving visibility in snowy environments.

Several options are available. The Plus Pack comprises comfort and technology upgrades, with the Pro Pack adding 21-inch wheels and subtle design details. The Nappa upgrade can be specified in addition to the Plus Pack, and includes animal welfare-secured Nappa leather upholstery with ventilation and massage, additional headrest speakers for the front seats and rear comfort headrests.

The Pilot Pack includes Pilot Assist and its extended features, and is included as standard in all variants. The Performance Pack increases the performance look and driving experience of the Long range Dual motor version, with 22-inch wheels, 4-piston Brembo brakes, Polestar Engineered performance chassis tuning and Swedish gold details for the brakes, seat belts and valve caps.

There’s no official on-sale date yet, but the Toyota Tundra full-size pick-up isn’t far away from its highly anticipated launch in Australia. In fact, 300 of these right-hand-drive converted Tundras have already found homes Down Under, via the Tundra Insider Program. The pre-launch program sees 300 potential customers getting a taste of the Tundra on a paid Full Service Lease basis, reporting back regularly to Toyota Australia on their experience.

With that, Australian specification for the Tundra has also been confirmed, leaving just the price tag a mystery. The US-built Tundra is converted to right-hand-drive by Melbourne-based Walkinshaw Automotive Group. Modified components include the steering rack, instrument panel, firewall, headlights, cabling, harnesses, front seats, carpet and trim, with many of the new parts sourced from the Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series.

Spec’ed in a single Limited grade for now, the Tundra features seating for five with a 60/40-split rear seat back. All seats are trimmed in synthetic leather with 8-way power adjustment and heating and ventilation for the front pair. The same upholstery is also applied to the transmission shifter and steering wheel.

The cockpit boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with user-selectable information displays. However, head-up display (HUD) isn’t fitted.

A huge 14.0-inch centre touchscreen complements the digital instrument cluster. It supports Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto connectivity, and AM/FM radio with sound from a 12-speaker JBL speaker system.

In terms of safety, the Tundra is equipped with an autonomous emergency braking pre-collision system with day and night pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, lane departure alert, lane trace assist, emergency steering assist and automatic high beam.

Powering the massive ute is a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 petrol engine with 290kW at 5200rpm and peak torque of 650Nm between 2400rpm and 3600rpm. The engine is paired with a 36kW/250Nm electric motor and 6.5Ahr nickel metal hydride battery (Ni-MH) for a total system output of 326kW and 790Nm. This essentially means the Tundra is Toyota’s largest hybrid model ever.

The engine drives through a 10-speed automatic transmission and a part-time all-wheel drive system with a two-speed transfer case and automatic limited slip differential. The Tundra matches the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado, its two main rivals, with a maximum braked towing capacity of 4500kg.

The seemingly designed for game console Hyundai N Vision 74 concept has reportedly been green light for production.

According to Korean new outlet ETNews, the brand intends to build 100 examples of the ultra-cool concept, with 70 of those destined for the showroom while the remaining 30 will be reserved for racing.

While this is potentially exciting news, Hyundai hasn’t officially confirmed the news.

If the report is true, the road-going Hyundai N Vision 74 will hit production in the first half of 2026. It will be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and electric hybrid, producing 596kW and drawing power from a 62.4kWh battery cell and two rear-mounted motors.

That’s 89kW more than the concept. The extra power means the production N Vision 74’s range will drop slightly from 600km to 400-500km.

As for its name, rumours suggest it will be badged ‘Pony Coupe’ as a nod to the original Hyundai Pony coupe from the 70’s.

Stay tuned!

The current generation Subaru Forester does most things you expect of a mid-size SUV right, but it’s little bland to look at and the hybrid variant falls short of its competitors. Fortunately, a new model has just been unveiled and it’s looking pretty promising.

Finally, the new 2025 Subaru Forester has got style. And by that we don’t mean a sleeker profile with smaller windows. The new SUV still has its trademark upright design with a vast glasshouse, but it’s been given some interesting styling elements like the larger grille, squared off wheel fenders and black garnish around the A- and D-pillars. The headlights and taillights have a smoky, more sophisticated design and the wheels are looking much more modern.

The overall proportion is similar to the outgoing model, which is just fine as there’s not much to fault there in the first place. It’s worth noting that the new SUV is some 18mm broader and 20mm longer than the current vehicle, though both the height and wheelbase remain the same.

The interior of the current model is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, and so the new generation model brings a totally redesigned cabin that comes complete with a large 11.6-inch touchscreen with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

While it appears that the instrumentation cluster has not gone fully digital yet, we can expect this to be the case further down the track.

The design of the cabin takes on a much more modern and adventurous approach, with improved storage facility and comfort. Ergonomics are said to have taken a step up, too, so is cabin noise suppression and overall refinement.

In terms of driving, Subaru says the chassis of the new Forester is 10 percent stiffer than before thanks to improved welding techniques and additional structural strengthening. Expect this to deliver improved driving dynamics and ride comfort.

While the current 138kW/245Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder normally-aspirated boxer engine is expected to be carried over to the new car with only some minor tweaks, Subaru has confirmed that the new Forester hybrid will utilise hybrid components from the current generation Toyota RAV4 – a move understandable given the average performance of the Subaru-developed hybrid powertrain used in the current model.

Essentially, the new Forester hybrid will pack the same RAV4 electric motor, battery pack and associated hybrid components, albeit hooked up to a Subaru boxer engine. The tricky question is how will the Forester hybrid retain Subaru’s renown asymmetrical all-wheel drive, which the RAV4 hybrid isn’t (on-demand e-four AWD only).

For those who have been longing for the return of a WRX-powered, turbocharged Forester, unfortunately this remains up in the air, at least for the time being.

The new 2025 Subaru Forester is expected to hit showrooms in North America in late 2024, with Australian launch not expected until at least early 2025.

The first batch of Suzuki’s ‘extra large’ Jimny XL has landed in Australia ahead of customer deliveries scheduled for January 2024.

Revealed by Suzuki Australia’s General Manager, Michael Pachota on Facebook who shared a photo of an Australian-specification Jimny XL bearing the personalised number plate ‘JBOXXL’; the much anticipated five-door Jimny will launch officially on the 5 December.

It is also the first time the Jimny XL name has been officially confirmed.

To recap, the Jimny XL is 340mm longer than the popular three-door model, with all of this going between the front and rear wheels to accommodate an extra rear door. Ground clearance is claimed to be 210mm.

It will share the regular model’s 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder petrol engine pumping out 75kW at 6,000rpm and 130Nm at 4,000rpm. It is married to a part-time four-wheel drive system with low-range and is offered with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

There is no word yet on the XL’s pricing, which will be revealed at launch. However, the current three-door Jimny starts at $30,490 plus on-road costs.

Suzuki Australia says it has already received over 1,500 pre-orders for the Jimny XL early this year.

The five-door model will be built in India for Australia, while the three-door Jimny will continue to be sourced from Japan.

Ford Australia confirmed pricing and specification details of the all-new seventh-generation Mustang.

At launch the new 2024 Ford Mustang is available in three models – EcoBoost, GT and a new addition called the Mustang Dark Horse. The EcoBoost is powered by a 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the GT and Mustang Dark Horse feature a 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet in two different outputs.

The Mustang EcoBoost is available with a Fastback (coupe) body style only and will open the Mustang line-up at $64,990. The GT is available in Fastback with a six-speed manual gearbox priced at $77,002 or ten-speed automatic transmission costing $80,902. The GT is also offered as a convertible body style priced at $86,752 which is fitted exclusively with an automatic transmission.

A 1,000-unit special edition model for Australia, Mustang Dark Horse is the first new Mustang performance nameplate in 21 years and will be available with both a unique TREMEC six-speed manual transmission at a price of $99,102, and an automatic transmission costing $103,002. Mustang Dark Horse is exclusively available in the Fastback body style.

All prices quoted exclude on-road costs.

Powering the Ecoboost variant is a 2.3-litre turbo four-cylinder engine developing 232kW @ 5500rpm and 475Nm @ 3000rpm. It’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The GT and Dark Horse models are powered by a 5.0-litre V8 naturally aspirated engine. In GT trim, the engine produces 347kW @ 7250 RPM and 550Nm @ 4850pm, while in Dark Horse guise the output is raised slightly to 349kW @ 7250 RPM and 548Nm @ 4850pm.

Mustang Dark Horse receives track-focused enhancements in the form of auxiliary brake cooling ducts, a transmission cooler and rear axle cooler, all designed to improve endurance and recovery.

A bespoke chassis tuning for the Dark Horse include stiffer front springs and specially tuned MagneRide 9 shocks capable of monitoring wheel and tyre movement 1,000 times per second, which optimises performance based on road surface or driving mode.

Mustang Dark Horse also features wider staggered wheels (19 by 9.5-inch front and 19 by 10-inch rear), with stopping courtesy of Brembo front six piston brakes with 390mm rotors. Traction is also improved thanks to a Torsen limited differential.

The new Mustang is available for purchase at Ford dealerships across Australia, with first customer arrivals scheduled for Q2 2024.
