Four-tier Volvo XC40 range kicks off from $47,990

The all-new Volvo XC40 is set for its Australian debut in April priced from a sharp $47,990 plus on-road costs.

The arrival of the XC40 premium compact SUV means Volvo now has three new, globally available SUVs in what is the fastest growing segment of the automotive market. The latest and most affordable XC member will rival the likes of BMW X1, Audi Q2, Mercedes-Benz GLA and the upcoming Lexus UX and Jaguar E-Pace.

The launch of XC40 marks two historic firsts for Volvo. It is the first ever Volvo to be built on the Swedish brand’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). It is also the first model to be available with Volvo Cars’ new 3-cylinder engine.

Nick Connor, Managing Director of Volvo Car Australia, said: “SUVs continue to be very popular with Australian car buyers, and the compact SUV segment is also growing rapidly. In such a competitive market you need to stand out from the crowd.” We are confident that with its very distinctive look and competitive pricing the XC40 will make an immediate impact with buyers who are looking for something very different from the cookie-cutter models in the compact luxury SUV segment today.”

“The XC40 exterior has an athletic sculpture with a subtle, timeless quality. The interior is a masterful composition of well-resolved architecture, beautiful materials and the very latest technology. These technologies will make the XC40 one of the best equipped compact luxury SUV’s on the Australian market.”

“There is also lots of storage space in the doors, underneath the front seats, and in the cargo compartment.”

“XC40 is a proper SUV and is the perfect car for an active Australian lifestyle. It perfectly complements our already award-winning SUV line-up.”

The XC40 includes a range of new technologies first introduced on its XC90 and XC60 Series siblings based on Volvo’s larger Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

Volvo’s approach to safety and user experience builds on a philosophy it calls Circle of Life. Safety and driver assistance features offered on the XC40 include Volvo’s semiautonomous Pilot Assist system, the latest generation of City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert with auto brake and the 360° Camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces.

Volvo claims that these and other technologies make the XC40 one of the best equipped compact luxury SUVs.

Whilst the XC40 is more compact that its XC90 and XC60 siblings, at 1863mm wide and 1652mm tall it is still larger than most of its competitors in the segment.

At launch the XC40 comes with two powertrains. The petrol-powered T5 delivers 185 kW and 350Nm of torque. The diesel driven D4 offers 140kW and 400Nm of torque. All Volvo XC40 variants have the latest Drive-E engine technology.

All XC40 comes fitted with the new Clean Zone two-zone climate system which removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver Scandinavian-fresh air on the inside.

Volvo Cars’ driver infotainment system (Sensus) with smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available.

The Volvo XC40 will be available in two variants – Momentum and the sporty and dynamic R-Design.
